Hi all Here is an update on Youth & Sustainable Consumption Australian Working Group stuff as of June 19 2005. It might not have seemed like much has been going on - but that is not true!!! We have made good progress on a number of fronts. However, we need to pull these activities together and take some more steps forward. That is the purpose of this e-mail. This update refers back specifically to the notes circulated after the 27 April 2005 meeting and workshop on Melbourne. DISSEMINATION OF CURRENT REPORT 3 tracks 1. media, print, publications ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * create 3 standard forms of text to distribute - a 2 paragraph one for e-mail lists - a 20 paragraph rewrite of the executive summary for an adult audience, i.e. policy, youth workers, government, etc. - a 20-30 paragraph write of the report targeted at young people > update is that Lisa and Tomi have created initial drafts of these that need to be reviewed and finalised ... John, Alan and Cameron to review these urgently and send all ideas for improvement / changes through to Tomi and Lisa ASAP via the TIG discussion group or directly to them * each article to include links to webpage + how to get involved > Cameron needs to create the webpage so that the articles can link to it appropriately * cameron and alan - and everyone in this group - to then send these articles to appropriate destinations, including - TNEP (cameron) - TUNZA (alan) - YSDA Philippines (cameron) - SustainUS (cameron) - UNEP (john) - Youth peaks (alan) - victorian environmental education journal > will need to review this once the articles are completed and coordinate distribution * also seek to get this picked up by various ABC radio segments, e.g. green room on triple j, hack on triple j * submit this report as a case study to the UNEP Youthxchange website (need someone to do this) > will someone please put their hand up to take care of this? * CSIRO Ecos magazine > A new opportunity has arisen here where ECOS magazine has an upcoming edition on Sustainable Consumption. They have been in contact with me about submitting an article. See the information below: James Porteous - Having considered this again tonight, I wondered if perhaps it would be easier if you were invited to write a short one page or so piece - whatever feels right (600 words per page in ECOS) discussing the main points of your report Sustainable Consumption: Young Australians as Agents of Change (2005) the Consumption, with perhaps, where you feel relevant, other commentary on consumption related topics The deadline would be three weeks from now (i.e. 8 July 2005). I hope that sounds manageable. It would sit alongside an article coming from Clive H focusing on the role of media in consumption. ECOS : Australia's magazine on sustainability. www.publish.csiro.au/ecos Phone +61 (0)3 9662 7604 Fax +61 (0)3 9662 7600 To see the style of the magazine you can download articles from the latest edition from http://www.publish.csiro.au/ecos/index.cfm?sid=10&issue_id=4989 http://www.publish.csiro.au/ecos/ I think we should be right to use one of the 20 para papers for this - James is apparently a great editor - so we just need to get the drafts sorted and the website done ... and they would love some pics to go with the article ... does anyone have anything appropriate?? 2. events ~~~~~~ * organise a canberra seminar on sustainable consumption and the role of young people, inviting reps from various organisations to present their views on SC and what youth can be doing - time it for july or august 2005 - cameron to initiate conversations and secure local support - presenters / invited people will include BCA, ACCI, The Australia Institute, National Environmental Education Council, coalition and opposition government ministers offices - also involve james moody who has great contacts and is based in canberra (perhaps get CSIRO involved through him) - target for this seminar is business and government, including policy makers > Cameron has had some initial discussions on this and there is certainly interest. However, due to time commitments, this is more likely to occur in September 2005 or even later * presentations at the Asia Pacific Roundtable on Sustainable Production and Consumption in Melbourne 10-12 october 2005 - cameron to contact his contact person there to discuss reduced registration fees for this team - john has applied to present - cameron has applied to present, accepted to present a poster > Cameron has declined the offer of the poster presentation and will co-present with John > Details on 'Supported Registrations" are below Supported registrations - A limited number of subsidised places are available. Priority for these placed will be given to NGOs and those giving papers from developing countries and overseas delegates who are not supported from donor projects. Please send with your registration form a letter requesting a supported registration detailing who you are, your organisation, if you have submitted a paper, reason for attending and why you need financial assistance. Subsidised places are subject to approval by the Roundtable committee and their decision is final. While I can't find the details now, my recollection is that full registration is about $650 and supported registration is about $350. * national symposium on the decade of education for sustainable development - john has been asked by the australian national commission for UNESCO to organise a symposium to get activities happening in australia for the decade - looks like some government funding secured and will likely be held in early july > This event is being held on 7 July in Melbourne and I am attending and have been asked to do a 3 ppt slide / 5-7 minute presentation on our Working Group and plans moving forward. I will need your assistance to review what I put down to ensure it is accurate and useful * students of sustainability (SOS) conference, july, venue to be determined - not discussed in the meeting - great opportunity to present to a wide variety of motivated university students about getting involved in local SC activities - cameron will likely be at this event wearing his fair trade hat in any case > SOS is at Monash University 10 or 11 July to 13 July > Tomi has contacted the organising team of SOS to get us a speaking slot in the official program + we can run a workshop or two > We need to do more work on this stuff ASAP! 3. government departments ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * write a letter, and attached photocopied executive summary of report, and send to all state and territory (and federal?) youth, environment and education ministers - letter to remind them of the report that they should have heard about - ask them what they are doing to implement elements of the report - ask them what we can do for them and offer to give their staff a seminar on the report, the results and the plans ahead * john to draft the letter and circulate for our input > John - where is this up to? * alan to share with john the database of youth minister contacts > Alan - have you done this? * john to find the relevant environment and education contacts > John - how is this going? Do you need assistance? RESOURCES * website - cameron to create a revamped section on IYPF website with information and links to various tools and resources > Still to do - relatively urgent so that appropriate links can be put in articles before being circulated + can ensure it has the correct content * working group e-mail list - for us, can communicate directly via e-mail + also share files > Tomi - is everyone on this now? * oz sc trainers yahoo group - email list that currently has all participants from the first round of train the trainer workshops * oz sc trainers TIG project page - an online platform for resources related to the youth workshops * report online - so that people can access it ... linked through website, oz sc trainers TIG page, etc. THE NATIONAL PROGRAM * discussed the elements of the ideal national program as outlined in the report * agreed that the opportunity to important to pass up, need to push to get it to happen, aim big - cost for ideal implementation about $600 000 / year, so seek out $2 million for 3 year implementation * agreed to create a snazzy looking prospectus that outlines the program, how it would work, how much investment needed, etc. - need someone with good graphic design skills to help with this > has anyone done any looking for this person? - john to do a first draft > john, where is this at? - want to have prospectus available before events start so that we have information to provide to people > what do we need to do to make this happen? * cameron trying to organise for john to meet with social ventures australia to discuss investment seeking strategy with them > this didn't happen as far as I know ... John, what, if anything, do we need to do from here on this? PILOT IMPLEMENTATION * apply for funds through the foundation for young australians, due may 5, for a pilot implementation in victoria * john to redraft last years application for submission * cameron to invite youth and youth related organisations in victoria to be involved in the project and provide a letter of support that agrees to be involved in the youth consultation and the youth workshops > The application was submitted on time. Thanks John! There was a bit of interest from organisations, but not until after the submission went in. OTHER INFORMATION * john has an australian research council grant application for major research initiative to build on the report - will know in november 2005 if it is successful
