Lawsuit Dismissed!
Novartis Lawsuit Dismissed!

Dear desirae,

I have important news to share with you.  Yesterday, we learned that an Indian court dismissed the suit brought by pharmaceutical company Novartis that could have greatly reduced the supply of affordable, lifesaving medications for the world's poor.  In addition, Novartis says it is unlikely to appeal the ruling!

In 2006, Novartis brought a suit against the Indian government to change a section of the country's patent law that safeguards public health.  If Novartis had won the case, the production of Indian generic drugs could have been cut back -- and millions of people around the world could have lost access to the medicine they need.

More than 45,000 CARE supporters responded by sending letters urging Novartis CEO Dr. Vasella to drop the case and protect affordable lifesaving medicines for the developing world.  Although Novartis did not drop its case, after weeks of intense public pressure, it announced that it is unlikely to appeal the Indian court's ruling.  This is outstanding news -- for those of us working to defend the right to health and for millions of people who are living productive lives thanks to Indian generic drugs. Click here to read the press release from CARE.

I wanted to share with you just a few quotes from letters to Novartis sent by CARE supporters:

"I hope you know what AIDS has done and is still doing in Africa . . I have three blood sisters who depend on ARV's for life. I may not be infected with AIDS but I am affected because I am nursing beloved ones who are infected and keeping orphans of those who are gone."

 --Hannah, Zambia

"As a woman and mother of two children of my own, I ask you please drop this case against the Indian government.  If I were sick and needed lifesaving drugs, I can't possibly imagine what it would be like to be denied those drugs.  Please don't deny other women the chance to live." --Michelle, LA

Yesterday's news illustrates the enormous impact we can achieve with the help of CARE supporters like you.  Thank you for all you do to empower women and families around the world to live healthy, productive and happy lives.

Sincerely,
Helene D. Gayle
