Priority Legislative Actions: Do These First This Week

1. Ask Representatives to sign on to the Payne– McCaul TB letter to the World Bank — deadline extended until November 30.  Rep. Payne (D-NJ) and Rep. McCaul (R-TX) have written a sign-on letter to World Bank President Zoellick about the Bank’s underinvestment in TB in Africa. Please ask your representatives to sign this important letter. The deadline is November 30. Along with a copy of the letter, we have a new fact sheet on XDR-TB that you can pass on to your representatives to underscore the urgent need to do more to fight TB. Download a copy of the letter and look here for a copy of the new XDR-TB Fact Sheet! This action coincides well with the action taken at the TB conference in South Africa recently when our RESULTS team got thousands of conference participants to write post cards to President Zoellick.Current signers (11/20): McDermott, Gillibrand, Shuler, Barbara Lee, Heather Wilson, Corrine Brown, Jesse Jackson, and Engle.

2. Stop TB Now Act: Get Media and Cosponsors. In addition to asking your Senators to cosponsor the Stop TB Now Act (H.R.1567, S.968), it’s also critical to get media published to influence your members (staff will deliver it to their offices). Please see “Media Actions and Opportunities” for information.

Secondary Legislative Actions: Do These Next

3. Child Survival Act will be Considered in Senate Committee Soon! Get Support!  The lead sponsors of the Child Survival Act (H.R.2266, S.1418) are trying to get the bill on the agendas of the Senate Foreign Relations and the House Foreign Affairs committees. Approval in these committees is the next crucial step in passing this legislation before the end of the year. Please continue to press your senators and representatives to cosponsor the bill, especially if they are Republicans on the committees. This is a great topic for Education and Action meetings. Use the November Action Sheet as your resource.

4. Domestic TB bill passes out of Senate Committee.  The domestic TB bill the Comprehensive TB Elimination Act (S.1551, H.R.1532) — sponsored by Sens. Brown (D-OH) and Hutchison (R-TX), passed the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee on November 14.If your members of Congress have indicated that they will support the global TB bill (either by cosponsoring or promising to support it on the floor), your next step is to ask them to support the domestic bill. Media Actions and Opportunities

World AIDS Day  World AIDS Day is December 1, and many papers will be covering the global pandemic — even outlets that don’t normally cover international issues. With editors in a global frame of mind, now is a great time to pitch them on the link between HIV/AIDS and TB, and how your senators can make a difference by passing the Stop TB Now Act. A brand new editorial packet is available on the website to help you out. Or, use the packet to help you write an op-ed on this issue. We will be continuing our push for passage of TB legislation into December, so don’t be afraid to reach out to editors now!

Looking to 2008!  RESULTS will be revealing our 2008 campaigns shortly. After the new year, schedule a meeting with your editorial boards to let them know what we’re working on and to discuss how you and the media can work together in the year ahead. It’s a great chance to re-introduce yourselves to the editorial board as members of the community concerned about global poverty issues.

Communications Officer Robyn Shepherd Is Here to Help! She’s ready to help you with media outreach. Please send her your media clippings/pieces (rshepherd@results.org).

Have You Heard?

Praise for RESULTS from the President of the Grameen Foundation: Alex Counts, President of the Grameen Foundation (and long-ago Legislative Director of RESULTS), sent us the following note regarding the amazing work you’ve all done to get media around the Congressional World Bank meeting: “Thank you for sending me the recent editorial, op-eds and articles on the World Bank microfinance advocacy. I found them very uplifting. The Boston Globe piece was especially good. The work of RESULTS has been so important to building up the microfinance movement and keeping it focused on the poorest (to the extent it is). RESULTS volunteers are the unsung heroes of this movement God bless them!”

Yunus: Bangladesh will have a poverty museum by 2030: Professor Muhammad Yunus recently reiterated his vow to create a “poverty museum” in Bangladesh by 2030. He thinks it is possible because Bangladesh is cutting poverty rates by 2 percent every year, and by 2015, Dr. Yunus hopes that half of the population will be above the poverty line.

Grassroots Building

1. See Results from Global Grassroots Survey: 101 of you filled out the survey! Thank you. You can see the results here: http://tinyurl.com/24d9y8

2. November Benchmark Reports Needed Soon: Use the 2007 Benchmark Reporting Form or contact your Regional Coordinator. Ask your RC to let you know which reports are missing for 2007.

Outreach

1. If they don’t see you, they can’t join you. Unless you organize regular outreach opportunities in your community, how will people find your RESULTS group? Quarterly outreach meetings, Monthly Education and Action meetings, tabling, advocacy training, and public speaking are all great ways for people to find out about you. Inviting new people to Monthly Conference Calls is not a way to inspire. Think about it — what is your group doing to give people the opportunity to find you?

2. Network of Spiritual Progressives could be a good group to affiliate with in your town. See if there is a chapter in your town here.

3. MDG Outreach Packet Now Available. This is a great resource for outreach events.

4. Advocacy Training Resources. Think about doing advocacy training in your community. See Activist Milestone #11 for ready-to-use session outlines.

5. Other Outreach Tools

Announcements

Help Build RESULTS Through New Media: Facebook, MySpace, Etc.RESULTS now has an official presence on Myspace, Facebook, Razoo, and Google with more coming in the near future. Some of the main goals of this campaign include: reaching out to new demographics that traditionally are not involved with RESULTS and direct them towards the website; bolstering current Domestic and Global Groups as well as fostering interest in the creation of new groups, specifically campus groups; updating the “friends” on issues, actions, and activities in a more compressed but still effective way.

TAKE ACTION: If you are on any of these sites, please join and invite others: Myspace, Facebook Group, Facebook Cause, Razoo. Our basic 12-minute video about the work of RESULTS, Everyday Heroes, can be found on Google Video and YouTube, and we have a GoogleMap to help people find the closest RESULTS group. In addition, if you have other suggestions for ways we can build our presence online please contact our fabulous volunteer New Media Associate, Dave Ballinger, at dballinger@results.org.
