Director of Advocacy and Organizing

Jubilee USA Network seeks a full-time Director of Advocacy and Organizing to be based in its Washington, DC office. The successful candidate will lead the Network's advocacy and government relations work while supervising program staff in the development and implementation of Jubilee USA's national grassroots organizing and outreach plan. The post is a senior level position in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment. Jubilee USA Network is an alliance of more than 80 organizations working to build the political will for cancellation of unfair and unjust international debts to fight poverty in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The successful candidate will report to Jubilee USA's National Coordinator.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary staff policy advocate for Jubilee USA Network by engaging in regular direct advocacy with House and Senate offices and the Administration in support of Jubilee's policy agenda.
- Convene and staff the Network's policy working group, which brings together member organizations to develop policy positions and to coordinate the organization's advocacy strategies.
- Stay abreast of new developments on issues of international debt, development finance Serve as an information resource on debt and related policy issues for supporters and policymakers.
- Write and edit education and advocacy materials for Members of Congress, other decision makers, supporters, member organizations, and faith communities.
- Oversee the development of Jubilee's organizing and advocacy work plan.
- Assure the implementation of Jubilee's organizing and advocacy plan, including the development and growth of the Jubilee Congregations program.
- Supervise Jubilee's outreach and advocacy team, currently consisting of the National Field Organizer, the Outreach and Congregations Fellow, and the Policy fellow.
- Maintain and deepen relationships with Jubilee Network Council member organizations and key organizational allies and support efforts of Jubilee local coalitions, grassroots activists, and member organizations on advocacy and grassroots mobilization as needed.
- Represent Jubilee USA Network at conferences, meetings, and in coalitions, including through regular public speaking engagements.
- Work closely with Jubilee USA's National Coordinator on media outreach, fundraising, strategic planning, and other areas as needed.
Qualifications
- Successful experience as a government relations, policy and/or outreach staff person of a nonprofit organization, religious denomination/church, or government agency/Congressional office.
- A minimum of 4 years full-time work experience in increasingly responsible positions in one or more of the above areas.
- Demonstrated experience with government relations and direct lobbying.
- Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with issues of international debt, development finance, IMF/World Bank policies, and/or international economic policy.
- Successful experience in utilizing grassroots mobilization and organizing strategies to achieve policy change (staff experience as a grassroots organizer preferred)
- Demonstrated experience representing an organization in meetings and coalitions.
- Demonstrated experience working in coalitions of diverse organizations; experience in working with faith communities particularly helpful.
- Some experience with media outreach ND fundraising from foundations, organizations, and/or individuals preferred.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong commitment to economic and social justice.
- Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns and considerations of the Jubilee Network with regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities.
- Fluency in English and Spanish, French, or another language commonly used in the Global South.
Compensation
Salary $45,000-$51,000 DOE. Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker's compensation and social security. Benefits include three weeks paid vacation, plus the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.

National Field Organizer

The National Field Organizer is based in Jubilee USA's Washington, DC office and leads the Network's grassroots organizing efforts and its faith-based outreach work. The National Field Organizer works closely with the Director of Advocacy and Organizing and the Outreach and Congregations Fellow to support the Jubilee Congregations program, priority campaigns, and other local grassroots organizing initiatives. Jubilee USA Network is comprised of more than 80 member organizations and is the US arm of the global Jubilee movement working for definitive debt cancellation and economic justice for impoverished nations.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates grassroots campaign planning- including development of goals, timelines, communications, educational materials and advocacy activities.
- Frequently travels to present workshops or meet with supporters and partners about organizing Jubilee activities in their region.
- Coordinates the Jubilee Congregations program by:
- Providing regular communications with Jubilee Congregation contacts;
- Recruiting new Jubilee Congregations and mobilize existing Jubilee Congregations to participate in campaigns and programs; and
- Preparing education and worship materials for Jubilee Congregations.
- Coordinates Jubilee's annual grassroots training conference, including hiring and supervising of a conference organizer, convening a conference advisory committee, and implementing a conference organizing plan.
- Coordinates Jubilee's annual speaking tours, including recruitment of speakers, promotion, press outreach, development of a local planning team, and hiring of a local tour organizer
- Coordinates efforts to educate and mobilize Jubilee members by:
- Helping to create content to for regular e-alerts;
- Organizing phone calls to members for campaign outreach;
- Notifying members about new information about issues or legislation; and
- Recruiting Network Council members to participate in campaigns.
- Ensure that database of constituent contacts is maintained and updated.
- In collaboration with other staff, develop and update education and action materials for Jubilee members and supporters as needed.
- Supervise interns.
Qualifications
- Successful experience in organizing, outreach, or advocacy at a faith-based institution, progressive nonprofit organization, or community non-profit organization.
- A minimum of 2 years experience in one or more areas above desirable.
- Demonstrated experience with organizing local educational events, maintaining relationships with local contacts and organizers, and convening and facilitating meetings;
- Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working on issues of international debt, global justice, and/or international economic policy.
- Demonstrated experience in working with faith communities helpful.
- Demonstrated experience with organizing speaking tours preferable.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
- Strong commitment to economic and social justice.
