Below is also a detailed information about the research position.

aspects of Africa's changing position in the world, including its relations
with such emerging powers as Brazil, China and India, and their impact on
African societies.
The researcher will be affiliated with the research group "Social Movements and
Political Culture" (SMPC), and will be expected to cooperate with other
research groups too, "Economy, Environment and Exploitation" in particular.
There is no strict geographical preference, although candidates with a good
knowledge of Central Africa (the Great Lakes region), West Central Africa (CAR,

apply.
The position involves:

collaboration with members of the SMPC research group and other ASC researchers

- giving advice and presentations to the media and public institutions,
including policy makers, and participating in public debates on African issues
and his/her field of research
- the candidate will be expected to acquire a working knowledge of the Dutch
language within a reasonable period of time.
The successful candidate will have:
- a PhD in one of the social sciences or related sciences on an African subject
- broad intellectual interests, an openness to other disciplines, and an
interest in combining theory and empirical research
- a good general knowledge of African studies and of, at least, one region in
Sub-Saharan Africa
- extensive research experience in Africa
- an good record of publications
- an excellent knowledge of English and, preferably, of French or Portuguese
- some experience in raising external funding and a willingness to pursue this.
This is a challenging position in an inspiring academic environment. The salary,
depending on experience, will be on scale 11 of the Netherlands university
salary scale, (max. € 4284,- before tax). The appointment will initially be for
one year only, with a possible extension of a further three years and a
permanent position after this.
