The group, under the banner of the LIBERIAN COALITION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT (LICICC) is comprised of over 32 CSOs. This request is part of an African-wide civil society campaign of over 160 organizations calling on their respective governments to reverse the AUs July 3, 2009 decision made at a Summit in Libya, not to cooperate with the ICC on this issue. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for President Bashir in March 2009 for war crimes and crimes against humanity in relation to the Darfur Crisis. The effort of the LICICC is a way of localizing this continent-wide campaign aimed at fighting impunity in Africa. The LICICC argued that withdrawing support from an international justice process sends a bad signal for Liberia especially when recalling that international support for a similar indictment of the Special Court of Sierra Leone accelerated the Liberian peace process, the fruits of which is the current state of peace in Liberia. Based on this experience, the LICICC refutes the argument of the AU leaders that the indictment of President Bashir will undermine the peace process in the Darfur region. It further states that the decision not to cooperate is contrary to Liberias obligations under the Rome Statute and the constitutive act of the African Union. Accordingly, the LICICC calls on the Liberian Government to fully support the ICCs indictment of President Bashir as a way of bringing peace to the troubled Sudanese area. This action will be in line with other countries, like South Africa and Uganda, that recently saw wisdom in reviewing their positions and have withdrawn their support for the AU decision. CONTACT: A.
